New AFib recommendations from the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association covered significant ground—but there is still much more to learn, experts explained. 

While the therapy has been successfully tested on animals in the past, this study represents the first time it has been used on humans.

“Marijuana use isn’t without its health concerns, and our study provides more data linking its use to cardiovascular conditions," one researcher said. 

Novo Nordisk shared initial results from the SELECT trial back in August, but now the full analysis—which includes data from more than 17,000 patients—has been published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

“Going forward, patients and medical teams have a choice of two pathways for chest pain relief: chest pain medication or PCI," one cardiologist said. 

“Nearly 300,000 cardiac arrests occur in hospitals in the United States each year, and only about 25% of people survive to hospital discharge after these types of events,” according to one author of a new analysis published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes.

The study focused on patients 65 years old and older who underwent treatment in one of 21 high-income countries.
