Ultrasound

Ultrasound, also referred to as sonography or diagnostic ultrasound, uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize soft tissue. Ultrasounds are frequently ordered to measure fetal anatomy during pregnancy, check for blood clots and to guide needle biopsy procedures of the breast, abdomen and pelvis. The imaging modality does not use any radiation to create images. Find news specific to cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography).

2 imaging orgs to spread ultrasound access around the world and over the long haul

Something like 50 million people in 10 parts of the developing world stand to experience a bounce in quality of healthcare in coming years thanks to a major new aid project co-led by two large nonprofits with expertise in medical imaging.

Preclinical med students quick studies in cardiac POCUS

Briefly trained in point-of-care cardiac ultrasound, 72% of second-year medical students obtained clinical-quality views from a mannequin and 61% made the correct diagnosis in a volunteer simulated patient.

neck ultrasound thyroid

Researchers link ultrasound features with risk of thyroid cancer recurrence

In particular, the experts paid close attention to instances of extrathyroidal extension (ETE) on ultrasound.

Interview with Rebecca T. Hahn, MD, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Chief Scientific Officer of the Echo Core Lab at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation and Director of Interventional Echocardiography at the Columbia Structural Heart and Valve Center. She discusses some of the trends of growing use of interventional echocardiographic guidance in transcatheter structural heart procedures, the growing number of tricuspid valve procedures, and use of 3D ICE.

bone and soft tissue tumors

Radiologists' understanding of tumor 'mimics' vital when assessing bone and soft tissue lesions

Authors of the new EJR paper explained that, although most of these tumors present in a similar way—with a lump or localized pain—their origins are wide-ranging and require the use of additional imaging to characterize the lesion.

Consequential imaging: 6 ways prenatal ultrasound affects health and/or care

Parents-to-be consider prenatal ultrasound imaging a ceremonial custom they don’t want to miss out on.

Supplemental breast imaging modalities of automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) and molecular imaging.

VIDEO: Use of supplemental imaging in women with dense breasts

Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) President John Lewin, MD, discusses the types of supplemental breast imaging used to aid cancer detection in women with dense breast tissue.

Two of the top stories this month included the death of MRI pioneer Raymond Vahan Damadian. Experts at MIT also developed ultrasound stickers that can be worn in the same manner as a Band-Aid while also producing diagnostic quality images in real-time. #MRI
