Ultrasound

Ultrasound, also referred to as sonography or diagnostic ultrasound, uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize soft tissue. Ultrasounds are frequently ordered to measure fetal anatomy during pregnancy, check for blood clots and to guide needle biopsy procedures of the breast, abdomen and pelvis. The imaging modality does not use any radiation to create images. Find news specific to cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography).

Ultrasound 'microjets' enable targeted treatment of neurological conditions

It can be difficult to deliver targeted therapy to the brain due to its protective barrier, which only allows certain nutrients and oxygen to pass through.

Risk prediction algorithm slashes number of unnecessary thyroid nodule biopsies

Although the vast majority of nodules are benign, many are referred for biopsy as a precaution to rule out malignancy.

20-minute ultrasound-guided procedure could cure hypertension

Hypertension caused by unilateral aldosterone-producing adrenal adenomas is curable by laparoscopic removal of the entire adrenal gland, but the invasiveness and recovery time can deter patients from the treatment.
