A jury in Georgia has pinned 60% of the blame for a stroke patient’s permanent whole-body paralysis on an ER physician and 40% on a radiologist—while clearing all other clinicians who had a hand in the catastrophic episode of care.

After programming its EMR to automatically order ultrasound screenings for people at risk of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), a healthcare system saw a 540% spike in monthly screening exams for the condition over a six-year period.

Research presented this week at the American Society for Radiation Oncology Annual 2022 Meeting argues for the inclusion of radiation therapy as a standard of care in liver cancer patients who are ineligible for resection and other standard therapies. 

Medtronic says the spinoff is an opportunity to better position both entities and create value.

“These initial actions are needed to start turning the company around," new CEO Roy Jakobs said in a statement. 

More than four-fifths of healthcare provider organizations are shorthanded of allied health professionals, and the job title with the most unfilled positions in the category is radiologic technologist.

“Once the study begins, it will likely be one of the largest heart pacing clinical trials happening in the world over the next few years," one specialist said. 

The partnership comes just a few months after Oracle completed its $28.3 billion acquisition of Cerner in June.
