Female authorship in musculoskeletal radiology research has seen a steady climb over the last two decades—a positive trend that is indicative of progress in a field where leadership is largely dominated by males. 

Researchers surveyed clinicians and staff in healthcare organizations with more than 100 physicians to determine if high childcare stress leads to greater intent to leave the job and reduce clinical hours.

The report placed radiologists’ annual compensation 6th among the top 10 highest physician salaries.

Radiologists are receiving salary offers averaging $455,000 to start a new job in 2022, up from $401,000 in 2021.  

These findings come from a new report on recruiting incentives among U.S. physicians and advanced practitioners. Interventional cardiologists earn the second highest starting salary of any specialty, with non-invasive cardiologists not far behind. 

Last week the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services posted a tentative Physician Fee Schedule for 2023. Initial reactions from radiology were muted. That changed this Wednesday.

The initial complaint, filed nearly one year ago, remains unresolved. 

Experts involved in the survey cautioned that the stagnancy of diversification is driving women and minorities away from the field completely, and efforts to change this are missing the mark.
