Under terms of the agreement, the Nashville-based multispecialty group will eliminate 70% of its obligations accumulated prior to filing the bankruptcy petition. 

The alleged kickback scheme spanned nine years, with Cardiac Imaging Inc. paying physicians "excessive fees" to oversee PET scans, the DOJ said.

Haemonetics expects the deal to increase its short- and long-term revenue. The all-cash transaction should close by January 2024.

The allegations revolve around payments referring cardiologists received to supervise PET scans from March 2014 to May 2023.

“We carefully made this decision in light of the horrifying recent events," CEO Erez Meltzer said in a statement issued Oct. 10. 

“Our organizations are strongly opposed to this newest guidance, which further broadens the already significant discretion health plans had," RBMA and others wrote Oct. 9. 

The past several days have seen a series of noteworthy healthcare developments involving brick-and-mortar consumer stores.

The American College of Cardiology, Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions and Society of Thoracic Surgeons raised the issue, which is related to the billing of transcatheter heart procedures such as TAVR.
