Researcher urges caution when considering fibrinolytics for elderly STEMI patients

A study presented at TCT 2018 questioned the benefits of “drip-and-ship” for elderly patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), finding patients in their 80s or older who were transferred with fibrinolytic therapy for PCI had an eight-fold risk of hemorrhagic stroke but no survival advantage.

Novel research led by Stephen Smith, PhD, from the Wellcome Center for Integrative Neuroimaging at the University of Oxford in the U.K.—whose team compared genetic data to 10,000 brain MRI scans from the U.K. Biobank project—gives insight into the genetic makeup of the human brain relevant to neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Lung cancer mortality projected to decrease by 79 percent from 2015 to 2065

Age-adjusted lung cancer mortality in the United States is estimated to decrease by 79 percent between 2015 and 2065, according to a new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. However, the authors noted, millions of lung cancer deaths are still projected during that time, making it especially important to emphasize screening in the years ahead.
