Physicians’ ties to industry influence device choice in ICD implantation

Physicians who have financial relationships with biomedical manufacturers are up to 12 times more likely to use an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) or cardiac resynchronization therapy-defibrillator (CRT-D) from that company instead of another manufacturer, according to preliminary research presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in Chicago.

New trial may allow CMAs to perform echocardiograms with AI-guided ultrasound

The study will determine whether CMAs can obtain echocardiograms that, when reviewed by cardiologists, will detect more patients with cardiac disease compared to a standard physical examination with an electrocardiogram (ECG) in a primary care setting, according to a Northwestern University press release.

A miniaturized version of a musical instrument developed by researchers at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, can’t produce actual music, but it may improve the quality of medical images, according to research published in the October issue of IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control.
